Overcrowded mouth. Overcrowding can require tooth extraction to prepare the patient for orthodontia. Aligning teeth isn’t possible if they are too big for your mouth.
Also, if a tooth can’t erupt through the gum, you may need to have a tooth extracted.
Infection. If your tooth is rotten and the damage spreads to the sensitive parts of the tooth like the pulp, you may be prone to infection. Root canal therapy can correct this condition, but if not, extraction may be needed to prevent further complications.
Risk of Infection. If you are currently receiving treatments like chemotherapy or have received an organ transplant, you may be required to have teeth pulled. These treatments can cause high risks in your immune system.
Gum Disease. Periodontal (gum) disease is the infection of the surrounding tissues and bones of the teeth. This infection may cause loosening of the tooth, leading to later extraction.
Before extracting your tooth, you will undergo an X-ray and a consultation with your dentist. Tell your dentist about any medications you are currently taking and your medical history, for this is something your dentist must be aware of.
For simple extractions, your dentist will give you a local anaesthetic, which numbs the area surrounding your tooth. This will help you feel nothing but pressure during the procedure. Your dentist will use forceps to remove your tooth.
For surgical extractions, you will likely receive local and IV anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia numbs the area around our tooth while the IV helps keep you calm and relaxed.
Your general dentist or oral surgeon will cut through your gum with a small incision and remove a portion of your bone to reach and extract your tooth.
Your recovery will depend on the severity of the procedure. Typically, recovery takes only a few days.
While staying home for recovery, follow these steps to minimise discomfort, reduce the risk of infection, and speed up the recovery process:
