Scaling and Cleaning

If you have severe gum disease and your condition requires gum surgery, your Deer Park dentist may recommend scaling and root planing prior to the surgery, as well as a thorough teeth-cleaning before the scaling and cleaning procedure.
The bacteria-filled plaque that causes gum disease tends to gather in the area along and just below the gumline.
If your gums have slightly receded from your teeth, you are at increased risk for gum disease and your Deer Park dentist may recommend scaling.
Scaling is a non-surgical treatment, but it is a different type of procedure from regular dental cleaning because it involves cleaning the regions of the tooth along and below the gum line.
Types of Dental Scaling Tools
There are two types of scaling instruments, and some dentists may use both:
Scaling with hand-held tools. Your Deer Park dentist or periodontist will use a dental scaler and curette to remove (scale) the plaque from the teeth manually.
Because the dentist can’t see the plaque, they rely on touch to identify areas of tartar build-up and rough spots.
Scaling with ultrasonic instruments. Ultrasonic scaling instruments remove plaque from the teeth using a vibrating metal tip that removes the tartar and a water spray to wash it away and keep the metal tip cool.
During the procedure, your Deer Park dentist will numb the gums and tooth roots with local anaesthesia, but teeth scaling and root planing cause minimal discomfort.
Your dentist will use specialised tools to remove the hardened deposits of plaque build-up from the teeth both around the gumline.
Root planing involves polishing rough spots on the tooth roots that contribute to the formation of gum disease by trapping and holding bacteria.
The whole procedure may be performed in one visit, although generally a quadrant or half of the mouth is advised per appointment.
After a scaling and planing, expect your gums to be numb and a little tender from the anaesthesia. But if you brush and floss daily, your gums should quickly regain a firm, healthy, pink appearance.
