A root canal treatment is necessary when the tooth’s pulp and nerve are rotten or infected. Some of the causes of infection include severe decay, fractured tooth, an injury from an accident, or a failed dental crown or filling.
Infection in the root canal of the tooth can cause:
Some of the signs that may indicate a need for a root canal treatment:
The first step is to undergo an X-ray to determine the status of the root canals and discover if there are any signs of infections around the root.
Your dentist will then administer local anaesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. Anaesthesia may not be required since the nerve is dead, but most dentists still anaesthetise the area to keep the patient calm and relaxed.
Next, a hole will be drilled in your tooth. This helps remove the infected pulp, nerve tissues, and surrounding debris from your tooth. Water is used to flush out all the unnecessary debris.
After cleaning, your tooth will be sealed. Some dentists wait a week before sealing, but others don’t. You can choose to have your tooth sealed on the same day you get a root canal treatment.
The last step is the restoration of the tooth. A crown, crown and post, or other restoration needs to be placed on the tooth for protection, prevention from breaking, and rehabilitation.
