- Take 12 to 18 inches of floss or dental tape and grip it, so you have a few inches of floss taut between your index fingers.
- Glide the floss or dental tape between the teeth and into the area between your teeth and gums, as far as it’ll go.
- Floss with 8 to 10 strokes, up and down between each tooth, to dislodge food and plaque.
Don’t give up if flossing is hard to do when you first try it. Flossing is a skill that can take time to learn. After a while, it will get easier and take only a few minutes.
Your gums may bleed and be sore the first week that you floss. Don’t worry! This will stop when your gums get used to regular flossing and become healthier.
