Child Dental Benefit Schedule

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) provides basic dental services to children aged between 2 and 17 years.

The patient must be eligible for Medicare on the day of service.

Dental Services Covered

Dental services covered by the CDBS include:

  • Dental Examinations
  • X-rays
  • Cleaning
  • Fissure Sealing
  • Tooth Fillings
  • Root Canals
  • Tooth Extractions
  • Partial Dentures

The CDBS doesn’t cover orthodontic, cosmetic dental work, or dental services provided in the hospital.

At Deer Park Dental Surgery, we provide children’s dentistry services including dental care plans, treatments, and check-ups.

Who is eligible for CDBS?

A child’s eligibility is assessed at the start of each year and lasts the whole year.

A child is eligible if they are:

  • aged between 2-17 years for at least one day of the calendar year
  • eligible for Medicare part of a family receiving Family Tax Benefit Part-A; or

receiving one of the following Australian Government Payments:

    • Youth Allowance
    • ABSTUDY Allowance
    • Disability Support Pension
    • Parenting Payment
    • Special Benefit
    • Carer Payment
    • Double Orphan Pension

How would I know if my child is eligible for the CDBS?

You will receive a letter from Medicare about Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

You can confirm your child’s eligibility by accessing your Medicare online account at or calling the Medicare general enquiries hotline on 132 011.

What if my child is ineligible under the CDBS?

They will still be able to join the GuS (Grow Up Smiling) program at no out of pocket expense to the school or parents – so long as you submit all requested information and records to their teacher by the school deadline.

How does the $1000 benefit work?

You may use the capped benefit of $1000 to pay for your child’s essential dental services over two years.

If the funds are not fully used within the first year, you can use them in the second year, provided your child is still eligible.

After the second year, any remaining balance will not be carried forward.

Will I have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses?

As long as your balance amount can cover the fees for the day’s appointment, you will not have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses.

Your claim will be bulk-billed via Medicare, so no patient co-payment is necessary.

The Importance of Paediatric Dentistry

Children require proper dental attention as much as adults do. They are prone to dental emergencies and are subject to multiple dental issues.

Our dental team detects dental problems early and prevents them from developing. This early diagnosis helps parents monitor their children’s health.

Underlying dental issues may cause more severe overall health problems if ignored.

Deer Park Dental Surgery is committed to educating children about the importance of their dental health. It is important that they learn to practice oral hygiene as early as one year old.
